Aboriginal Women Start Night Patrol
Aboriginal Women – Start Night Patrol

In Maningrida, the aboriginal women have started night patrol. The women of this community have decided to take a stand against social problems because they feel that their community has been deteriorating in recent years due to drug abuse and a break down in family structures.

Allegations of child sexual abuse have rocked the community, and this is the main reason behind their decision to start night patrols.

The ABC reported that these women have applied for Commonwealth funding to support its efforts to help solve a situation that no one else is able to do. The women’s efforts will help get children who are vulnerable off the streets at night.

Helen Williams Djimbarrwala feels the women of this community are in a unique position to help restore some order in the community. These women are a lot stronger and it is felt that the children will listen to them because those women are mothers and grandmothers in Maningrida.

As an Australian woman, I hope the Commonwealth Government sees this as a step in the right direction for Maningriba. It would be good to see them provide the funding so that this community effort by the women of Maningriba succeeds and some order is restored.

Maningrida is located 500 km east of Darwin and 300 km East of Jabiru is an indigenous community in the heart of the Arnhem Land region of the Northern Territory.
